The Centre for Canadian Studies at Brock University Call for Papers – Two Days of Canada at Play BrockUniversity, 25-26 March, 2022. Now in its fourth decade, Two Days of Canada(2DC) is an annual symposium that brings together scholars from acrossdisciplines to examine a specific theme from a variety of perspectives. In anticipation of the Canada Summer Games, tobe held in the Niagara Region in 2022, the Centre for Canadian Studies at Brock University, in collaboration with Brock’s Faculty of Applied Health Sciences, invites paper submissions or panel proposals on the theme of “Canada at Play.” This interdisciplinary symposium will examinethe links between play (in all its forms) and Canada. Paper topics can includeanything from high level professional or Olympic sport, to community recreationleagues, to any aspect of the idea of play that captures athleticism, recreation, health, and/or community.
This call is open to all disciplines, and theonly limiting factor is that the papers must be on Canadian topics, broadlyconstrued (geographically, thematically, regionally, etc.). It is our intention to hold this as a hybrid(inperson and online) event: All panel and papersessions, including keynote talk, will be provided virtually using MS Teamsand, public health regulations permitting, they will be held on campus. Thus participants may present and attend in person, with appropriate attendance and distancing restrictions. There will beno need to identify a participant’s preference for delivery mode in the paper submission. We are planning several associated events, including a film screening and a tour of the Canada Summer Games site, and these may be held only in person.
Submissions shouldinclude an abstract of no more than 500 words and a list of authors’ names andaffiliation (university/college/organization/independent). Please also include a condensed CV.
Potential paper topics include, but are notlimited to: -Sport/recreation/play and identity formation -Sport policy and recreation in Canada -Historical analyses of sport and Canadianculture -Indigenous and decolonizing approaches to sportand play -Play and Nationalism(s) -Globalization of Canadian past times -Canadian Diasporas -Play and immigration -Play and regionalism in Canada -Play and education -Play in spaces and places |
